STATUES OF SUBJUGATION

Often coupled with muses of pain and tolerance, these Statues of Subjugation are frozen in eloquent sadness.

FUN WITH FIGURES (EVENT)

Artist and Teacher on Skillshare, Charly Clements hosted an event on Instagram (@charlyclements) called "Fun with Figures: Daily Drawing Prompts" in April of 2021. For seven days, we were given a set of words to use as inspiration for a drawing of a person, their personality, and/or their environment. Some of these entries can be seen below (and more on my Instagram @lifepoorlydoodled)!

ALL IS F9 IN BLACK & W9

Drawing people always scared me. It never looked right to me, and it never looked flattering to them. That's why I dropped the concept and drew buildings instead! But when a friend saw the line drawings I did of the Holland buildings, and wondered if that look could be transported to people. Since I thought it was a pretty clever idea, I gave it a try. Frankly, I love how it came out! Sadly, I haven't had the same luck reproducing the style. Maybe I have to get back into that art-itect mindset again...... think, think, think!

EL ERNIE – BUILDING STUDY

This was my first in-depth study of a building. The original building is an Italian Restaurant-cum-Hotel in the city. However, the sketch on its own gave me some beach-y vibes that I couldn't resist hinting towards in the final design. One struggle that was quite apparent to my beta testers was my...can I say, depth perception? And one even more obvious to myself, color.

COLOR ME HOLLAND DAYS

I was depressed. There, I said it. I was sad, it was winter in quarantine and I finally finished Cheers for the first time. I became obsessed with the idea of buying churches and fitting them with grand interiors. In my round-about research, I found a catalog of a terribly scanned 1800s travel journal. It illustrated landscapes from Russia through to Germany.

To get my fingers moving and practice using digital brushes again, I decided to revamp the old buildings. My initial plan was to leave them for coloring purposes, and I soon fell into the trap by coloring them all myself! While I do prefer the outline versions, I absolutely loved the first colored attempt (as seen below w. yellow background).
